How We Research and Update Our Guides

A roof leak is stressful and the internet is full of vague advice, so we hold ourselves to a few rules. Here's how our pages get written, checked and updated.

On this page
  1. Where our facts come from
  2. How we handle prices
  3. What we say when we're not sure
  4. Independence of our guides
  5. What we are not
  6. Updates and corrections

Where our facts come from

  • Official sources first. Hillsborough County pages, Florida statutes as described by reputable organizations, and Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation resources.
  • Industry and insurance sources such as the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association, insurance agencies and consumer news outlets.
  • Published price data from directories such as Angi and HomeAdvisor, and from Tampa-area roofers and law firms that publish their estimates.
  • Census and ZIP code data for local statistics.

Every page that makes factual claims lists its sources at the bottom, with links where we have them.

How we handle prices

We label prices as averages, ranges or one company's published estimates. They are never quotes. Different sources define jobs differently, so ranges can overlap or conflict, and we say so. We don't invent prices, ratings, reviews or years in business.

What we say when we're not sure

If we couldn't confirm something, we say so, such as a specific permit fee, and point you to the official source. Where two sources disagree, we explain the difference. Where something is our reasoning rather than a published fact, such as working out when a roof turns 15 from its replacement year, we show the arithmetic.

Independence of our guides

Our guides explain costs, rules and what to ask the same way whether or not you ever call us. If a cheaper or simpler option fits your roof, the guides say so.

What we are not

We're not an insurer or a law firm. Our guides are general information and aren't legal, insurance or engineering advice. For questions about your policy, ask your insurer or agent. For legal questions, speak with a Florida attorney.

Updates and corrections

Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We revisit pages when Florida rules, Hillsborough County pages or published prices change. If you think something is wrong, tell us. Call (813) 555-0100 or write to 1100 Seffner Valrico Rd, Valrico, FL 33594, and we'll check it and correct it.
