A shingle repair replaces or reseals the damaged spots and checks what's under them. It works when the roof is basically sound. If shingles are brittle across the whole roof, or leaks keep coming back, a repair may only buy time.
Signs shingles are the problem
- Missing shingles or bare patches after a storm
- Tabs that lift, curl or crack at the edges
- Granules, the gritty surface, piling up in gutters or at downspouts
- Exposed or popped nails that have pushed up through the shingles
- Creases where wind folded a tab back
- Stains on the ceiling that show up after hard rain
Why shingles fail in Valrico
Sun and heat dry out the asphalt, and daily Florida rain keeps cycling the roof between wet and hot. Afternoon storms push gusts against the edges, and a seal that has already loosened gives way. Age is the biggest factor. Insurers treat 15 years as a milestone for shingle roofs, and one Florida insurance expert says many carriers prefer shingle roofs under that age. Our guide on Florida's 15-year roof rule explains why that number matters to you.
What a shingle repair usually involves
- Find the real cause. The damaged shingle may not be where the water enters. A good roofer checks flashing, penetrations and the underlayment too.
- Remove the damaged shingles. The roofer lifts the surrounding shingles, removes the old nails and slides out the bad piece.
- Install new shingles and fasten them properly. New pieces go in with the right nails, and the tabs get sealed down.
- Reseal lifted edges and cover exposed nails. Small fixes like these stop a lot of leaks.
- Check the flashing and vents nearby. Plenty of leaks blamed on shingles start at a worn boot or flashing.
New shingles may not match older, sun-faded ones, and some older styles are no longer made. Ask the roofer what the repair will look like.
When a repair isn't enough
- Shingles are brittle or cracking across much of the roof
- Granule loss is widespread, not just in a patch
- You're getting leaks in several places, or the same spot keeps leaking
- The decking under the shingles is soft or rotted
- The roof is at or past the age your insurer cares about
Even then, a repair can buy time. Ask the roofer to explain how long they expect it to hold and show you photos of what they see. For older roofs, the 25% rule can also come into play if a lot of the roof section is being replaced. See roof repair permits and the 25% rule.
What shingle leak repair costs
Angi's 2025 data puts typical Tampa-area roof repairs at $463 to $1,589, averaging about $1,016. A Tampa roofer's published estimates for a minor leak caused by backed-out nails start around $550. Cost climbs when the decking is wet, the roof is steep or several spots need work. See the full cost guide for roof leak repair in Valrico.
Questions to ask the roofer
- What caused the leak, and can you show me?
- Will you replace the damaged shingles or just seal them?
- What does the repair come with: any warranty, and for how long?
- Are other shingles near the end of their life?
- Does this repair need a permit?
Mistakes to avoid
- Smearing roof cement over everything. It looks like a fix and can trap water. A roofer should repair, not just cover.
- Walking the roof yourself. Shingles are easy to damage, and a fall can be serious.
- Ignoring a small leak. Wet decking and insulation turn a cheap repair into a bigger one.
Shingle roof leak questions
Can a few shingles be replaced without replacing the whole roof?
Yes, if the rest of the roof is in decent shape. A roofer can replace damaged shingles and reseal the area. If the roof is old and brittle, a repair may not last long.
Will new shingles match my old ones?
Not always. Sun fades older shingles, and some styles are discontinued. Ask the roofer to show you what the repaired area will look like.
Does a shingle repair come with a warranty?
It depends on the roofer. Some offer a workmanship warranty on repairs and some don't. Ask before you agree, and get it in writing.
Can I use roofing cement on a lifted shingle myself?
It's a temporary fix at best, and getting on a roof is risky. A roofer can reseal tabs correctly. If you must act, keep it to the inside: buckets, towels and photos.
